Kanchenjunga Base Camp is a remote, high altitude and long trekking trail located in far eastern part of Nepal near India border (Sikkim) that offers breathtaking vistas of high Himalaya, local ethnic settlement of Rai and Limbu, off the beaten path, lush green forest of rhododendron, oak and pine trees, glacial moraine with high adventure passes. The land of Kanchenjunga is also the residence of various wildlife such as musk deer, wild boar, red panda, black bear and different species of Birds. 

Kanchenjunga is the 3rd highest mountain of the world standing with an elevation of 8586 m above sea level. It is the less crowded tourist destination of Nepal, so the trekkers feel silent atmosphere during their hike to Kanchenjunga. Without trekking guide and permit, tourists are not allowed to entry in this region. The trekkers also need two people having their legal document authorized by local trekking agency of Nepal. The trekking trail to Kanchenjunga goes through the Arun valley which is reflected as one of the most attractive regions for trekking in Nepal.) 

The unbelievable scenery around south and north base camp is impressive which is surrounded by glaciers, mountain lakes, and ice lined peaks. The super view of Kanchenjunga and adventure passes of Mirgin La and Sinion La makes your trip more exciting. The trekkers can explore the high Himalayan peaks such as Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Makalu (8,481 m), Yalungkhang (8,508m), and Jannu Himal (7,770m). Jannu Himal is considered as one of the Holy Mountain, so climbers are not allowed to climb. The best time to trek Kanchenjunga trekking is in pre-monsoon season (March, April, and May) and Post-monsoon season (September, October and November). 

The Kanchenjunga trekking begins with 50 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (Jhapa) and drive to Taplejung via beautiful Ilam tea garden with cultivated incredible scenery. At first, we begin our trekking from Taplejung Bazaar to North base camp walking through Chiruwa, Amjilosa, Ghunsa, and Lhonak. Then, we head up to Kanchenjunga south base camp via Sele le Pass, Mirgin La Pass Tortong, Tseram and hike down to Taplejung and drive to Bhadrapur. After finishing long, adventure and challenging Kanchenjunga trekking, we fly back to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur.

Itineraries

Your adventure and cultural trip to Nepal begins after your arrival in Tribhuvan International Airport Kathmandu. After you will land, get your hand bag and go to immigration office where you can get your Nepal visa. There must be many people; need fill form before apply for visa and get down to 1st floor where you will wait your suitcase. After getting suitcase, go outside where our office member shows your Name in white paper sheet and transfer to Hotel. We have booked your hotel in Thamel which is the touristic hub of Nepal.

After breakfast, your cultural tour begins where our Guide will brief to you about whole Nepal including history, culture, people, religion, geography and living standard of People. You will visit popular world Heritage sites of Nepal such as Swyambhunath (Monkey Temple) - Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage site, Patan Durbar Square – Old King Palace with Beautiful Temples and Houses, Pashupatinath Temple - popular Hindu temple of South Asia and Boudhanath Stupa – biggest Buddhist stupa with monastery around. It is full day guided city tour where you will learn most important historical and cultural things of Nepal. After you will return back to Hotel from sightseeing, meet with your Trekking Guide and brief about trekking program.

After having breakfast in the hotel, you will fly to Bhadrapur from Kathmandu with our trekking guide. It takes 50 minute flight to reach there and we drive to Ilam with our trekking porter by private Jeep. We already send trekking porter by Bus from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur because it is long drive, takes 12 hour reach there. Ilam is beautiful place which is located in hill area having beautiful Tea garden. We will sleep in tea house of Ilam Today. Ilam is also known as queen hill due to its beautiful landscape.

In the morning, we will enjoy the beautiful landscape around and drive to Taplejung through beautiful countryside and lovely green hills. There is more cultivated land during our drive. We cross Phidim, and Suketar and reach to Taplejung.

After having breakfast in local Tea house, we begin our trekking from Taplejung to Mitlung today. The trekking trail passes through classical local settlement, agriculture farm land and beautiful greenery of Himalaya. We follow the Tamor River and bird filled forest to reach Mitlung which is the beautiful Chhetri settlement.

The trekking trail goes to Chiruwa from Mitlung today. We hike through local settlement of Kirati, and sub-tropical dense forest having ascending and descending path. Even we cross the beautiful local villages of Sinuwa and Tawa and reach to Chiruwa. There is the super view of Kanchenjunga and Kumbakarna today. On the trail, we can also observe the cultivation of Cardamom crossing through landslide debris rock and rivers.

Our trekking destination goes to Sekathum from Chiiruwa today hiking through beautiful villages such as Taplethok, Tamewa, Hellok and Lelep. These villages are inhabited by Rai, Limbu and Sherpa people. We hike alongside with Tamor River and descend towards Simbu Khola River which occurs Yalung glacier. The trekking trail further goes ahead via seep and narrow Ghunsa Khola Valley and reach to Sekathum. Today, our permit of Kanchenjunga national Park is checked in Taplethok village.

We follow the Ghunsa Khola River and head up to Amajilosa today hiking through uphill topography, lush and green forest of rhododendron and Oak, and local Sherpa settlement. We will enjoy the beautiful landscape around with steep uphill climb till we reach Tibetan settlement of Amajilosa. We sleep local tea house of Amajilosa today.

We start our trek through forested land of Bamboo, Birch, Brown and rhododendron forests and also cross the beautiful waterfall with few scattered summer pastures. We continue to climb along with attractive Ghunsa valley having beautiful landscape and reach to Ghunsa Khola. From here, the trekking trail goes climb up to Sherpa settlement of Gyabla. There are not human residence during our trek from Amajilosa to Gyabla.

The trekking trail goes through bamboo, hemlock and fir forest along the river bank. It takes whole morning to trek via Yak pastures and cultivated potato field until we reach Phale. There is a small village in Phale with Buddhist monastery having some Buddha statues and paintings, brought from Tibet many years ago. Then, we enter to beautiful forests, some cultivated fields and cross the suspension bridge over Ghunsa Khola River. Finally, we reach to Ghunsa village which is the largest Sherpa settlement during whole trip to Kanchenjunga.

Today is the acclimatization day in Ghunsa, bur we are not staying in Tea house rather we will walk around to explore the Tibetan settlement and Himalayan landscape. To adjust in high altitude and to reduce AMS we should stop at Ghunsa. Ghunsa is the beautiful Tibetan settlement having old Khampa Dzong monastery. We hike along the trail to Lapsang la by following Yamatarai Khola, to a Lake at the terminal moraine of the Yamatari glacier. From here, the trekking trail goes to Kanchenjunga north base camp and Kanchenjunga south base camp via sele le Pass.

We follow the main trail of Kanchenjunga North Base Camp having gradual climbing up to Ghunsa Khola hiking through beautiful pine, rhododendron and larch forest. There are so many Buddhist Mani wall, and Chortens on the way which reflect he primitive history of Tibetan culture. Then, the trail goes west bank of Rumbuk Kharka and crossing the stone bridge over river we climb towards Kambachen. We must walk very slowly due to narrow path and high waterfall with rock fall area. Further, the path goes towards large sandy landslide before steep climb to Kamabachen. Finally after finishing uphill climbing we reach to Kambachen where there is the magnificent mountain view of Jannu (7,710m).

From today, we leave all lush green forest and enter to glacial territory. We begin our trekking through uphill climbing with rocky field and summer pastoral huts until we reach at Ramtang. Beyond the area, there is snout of Kanchenjunga glacier which comes to join with Ramtang glacier. We will hike on the high plateau, cross Kanchenjunga glacier and reach to Lhonak glacier no the north. Lhonak is situated above main glacier having summer grazing kharkas. Lhonak is one of the beautiful place to explore high Himalaya such as Nepal Peak (6,910m) Wedge Peak (6,750m), and Twins Peak (7,351m).

Pang Pema is also known as Kanchenjunga Base Camp from where trekkers can have stunning view of Kanchenjunga. We hike from Lhonak to Pang Pema which is also final destination of our whole trip. We go gradually across the plain and follow the line of the moraine and climb ridge before reaching Pang Peama. We will enjoy the mountain view of Shikhar, Gimmigela Chuli, Pyramid Peak and kirat Chuli.

We explore Kanchenjunga Base Camp today having spectacular view of white Himalayan Peaks. We hill hike nearby ridge to encounter the Mountain View. The north face of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Jannu are the main attractive beauty of this region, so you feel life time unforgettable experience here. Beyond the area, there is beautiful Langpo Glacier flows into the Kanchenjunga glacier.

After exploring the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, we trek down same way to Kambachen having downhill path via Lhonak and Ramtang. Even in single day, we can reach to Kambachen from Pang Pema. On the way back, we will enjoy the great view of silver mountain peaks too.

We continue downhill walk to Ghunsa through beautiful dense forest and impressive Himalayan scenery. First, we reach to Phale and even the trekking trail goes ascent to Ghunsa by crossing suspension bridge over Ghunsa Khola River. We cross the beautiful farm land and forest till reaching to Ghunsa. We already spend our 2 nights in Ghunsa before.

By leaving Gunsa, we trek to Sele Le today crossing through less tick forest, Buddhist Mani wall, Chortens, and Prayer flags. Sele Le is a kharka having simple goths where animals and mountain goats, Yak grazing over this hill. We can have beautiful Mountain View of Everest and Makalu from here. In Sele le, there is very basic tea house which opens only during trekking season of spring and autumn.

The trekking trail goes to Tseram from Sele Le via three adventure passes such as Sinion La Pass (4460m), Mirgin La Pass (4480m) and Sinelapcha Pass (4646m). The passes is totally covered with full of snow and rock, so it is quite adventure and challenging walk due to high Himalayan cross. We can have beautiful Mountain View such as Jannu Himal, Makalu and Chamlang. Tseram is also small kharka having basic Tea house which is inhabited during summer months when herders take their Yaks from Yamphudin. We can also see Himalayan goats here in Tseram.

The trekking trail goes to Ramche from Tseram through beautiful Pines and rhododendron forest and reach to Yak Kharka. There is an ancient monastery called Decherol Gompa which was built by local monks in historical period. Then, we cross the open valley with juniper, cinnamon forest also cross frozen streams and hike to Ramche. Ramche is beautiful place for enjoying glacier with Himalayan views. It is also a summer grazing kharka having very few lodges.

Today is the main highlight of the whole trip to South Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Only trekking guide will lead the way where porters will wait you in Ramche after exploration of Kanchenjunga Base Camp. We follow the rocky trail to the stream and climb up through Mani wall and Chortens on a high moraine. Then, we reach to Yalung glacier which is also known as Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. We can have magnificent view of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Jannu and more silver mountain peaks. After exploring Base Camp, we trek down to Ramche.

Our trekking trail goes to Lamite Bhanjyang from Ramche today. We walk along with Simbua Khola River hike through rocky and forested area. We reach to Tortong as we been here after returning from Kanchejunga North Base Camp via adventure passes. Then the trail goes through beautiful forest of rhododendron and reach to Lamite Bhanjyang. We sleep local tea house of Lamite today.

We have long walk down today to Yamphudin crossing Simbuwa Khola and zigzags yak damage track. We cross the beautiful places such as Lasiya Bhanjyang, Chitre Kharka, Amji Khola, Chautara and finally reach to Yamphudin. Yamphudin is the beautiful Sherpa settlement, which is also called Sherpagaon. Our trekking permit is again checked here by Kanchenjunga Conservation Area project office.

After having breakfast, we trek down to Phumphe from Yamphudin hiking through dense forest and local village settlement. We also cross the cultivated land of paddy, potato with beautiful waterfall and terraced field. We reach to Mamanke and again descend by crossing long suspension bridge over Takshewa Khola River and finally reach to Phumphe village. We will sleep at local tea house of Phumphe today.

We have very pleasant walk to Simbu from Phumphe hiking through beautiful forest, waterfall and local village settlement. We can also have last view of Mt. Jannu while trekking down. Before reaching to Simbu, we cross the Khesewa and climb towards beautiful Kande Bhanjyang, again hike down to Kunjari. After crossing the Phewa Khola with steep climb, we reach to our destination of Simbu.

This is the last day trekking in Kanchenjunga region. We follow the tractor road and reach to Mayam, cross suspension bridge with beautiful village settlement and attractive landscape. We reach to suketar and descend down to Taplejung for our next day drive to Bhadrapur. If the weather is good, or if airport opens, we can also fly to Biratnagar but it is very rare due to weather and less tourist in the flight.

We drive to Birtamod via, Pachthar and Ilam district. It takes 9-10 hour drive to reach Birtamod from Taplejung. We drive through beautiful hill station, agriculture farm land and tea garden of Ilam.

We will fly to Kathmandu from Bhadrapur after having amazing and long Kanchenjunga trekking.

After completing, Gokyo Lake Trekking, you are free in Kathmandu or you can have shopping as gift of Nepal to your family and friends. You must be very tired after trekking, can also have good body massage in Spa center. You will feel free and explore local markets and also enjoy your time in good restaurant in Thamel.
